Understanding Digital Marketing

Digital Marketing is a broad term that includes all the efforts and utilization of various tools and technologies to market something on the Internet. It has proven its power to transform businesses into overnight success. It is a powerful tool to reach your target audience to bring the desired results.

In this section, I’ll focus more on key concepts and basics of digital marketing and how it can help you launch your career in this field.

The Components of Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is made up of several components, each of which plays a crucial role in reaching and engaging with your target audience. These components include:

  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO): SEO is the process of optimizing your website to rank higher in search engine results pages. This is achieved through a combination of on-page and off-page optimization techniques, such as keyword research, link building, and content creation.
  • Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising: PPC advertising involves placing ads on search engine results pages and other websites. Advertisers pay each time a user clicks on their ad, hence the name “pay-per-click.” This is an effective way to drive traffic to your website and generate more leads.
  • Social Media Marketing: Social media marketing involves using social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram to promote your brand. It’s a powerful tool to engage with your audience and build trust and relationships with them. This can include creating and sharing content, running paid ads, and leveraging influencer marketing.
  • Content Marketing: Content marketing involves creating and sharing valuable content, such as blog posts, videos, and infographics, to attract and engage with your target audience. This can help build brand awareness and establish your business as an authority in your industry.

Why Digital Marketing is Important?

If you are even a little aware of business dynamics, you will never ask this question but still, that question may nudge your mind at some point so, I’m going to address and answer it here for that time.

1.      Wider Audience

Several reasons make digital marketing important for businesses today. First and foremost, it lets businesses reach a wider audience than traditional marketing methods. As you might be aware of the fact that almost 66% of the world’s population has internet access. That’s almost 5.3 billion people. That’s your audience size when you choose digital marketing over traditional marketing methods.

If you erect a billboard that costs you thousands of dollars, it will cover the audience roaming through that particular road. And if you buy airtime then the audience size will be no more than a few million. In fact, if you somehow spend millions of dollars to run your ad on every BBC channel in every part of the world, you can reach a maximum of 489 million viewers. That’s huge but still, a peanut when compared to the audience size of online users.

2.      Cost Effective

Digital marketing is also cost-effective, making it an attractive option for businesses with limited budgets. Unlike traditional marketing methods, such as print or television ads, digital marketing allows you to target specific audiences and track the effectiveness of your campaigns in real time. If managed carefully, there will be the least wastage of funds because you can very precisely target your audience online.

On the other hand, traditional marketing never lets you be so precise and surgical in targeting. Let’s take the example of Billboard again. Can you be even 50% sure that only the target audience will view the billboard? No, everyone passing through that road will see it whether that person is your target audience or not.

Similarly, running ads on TV can’t ensure that the message is viewed only by the desired category but will be viewed by anyone who tuned into that channel while your ad was running on it.

Apart from precision, the cost compared is too small and efficiency is high when you choose digital marketing over traditional marketing.

3.      Personalization and Engagement

We have better personalization options when we opt for digital marketing. Better personalization results in better engagement. You can address the person with their names while running an email marketing campaign. You have all the data and analytics that allow you to personalize the marketing campaign.

I was born in July, and I often see T-shirt ads on Facebook saying, “Kings are Born in July”. That’s just an example to show how smartly you can engage the audience in digital marketing. But that’s not the case when it comes to conventional marketing techniques. On a billboard or road sign, you can write, “Hey Yankee!” if you are targeting the people of New York. Or you can flash “Hello Travelle!” if you are running an animated ad on the screen installed at some airport but that’s the peak of personalization offered in conventional marketing.

Overall, digital marketing is a powerful tool that can help businesses reach their target audience and achieve their marketing goals. By understanding the components of digital marketing and how they work together, you can launch a successful career in this exciting and ever-evolving field.

Launching Your Digital Marketing Career

Learning skills alone won’t make you successful. You will have to apply the knowledge to the practical use. So when you are pretty confident that you have gained the required basics and advanced skills to be a successful digital marketer, it’s time to jump in and start your digital marketing career.

There are a few key steps you can take to get started. Building a professional network and gaining experience are two critical components to launching a successful digital marketing career.

Building a Professional Network

Building a professional network is the key to launching your digital marketing career. Networking is helpful in any field but for a digital marketer, it is the oxygen to survive and stay alive. Use your communication skills to make connections in the industry. Find the opportunities and collaborate to gain a name in the market. Stay up-to-date with the latest trends because this is a very volatile field where trends change with every passing hour.

To build your professional network, consider attending industry events and conferences. These events provide an excellent opportunity to meet other professionals in the field and learn from industry experts. Additionally, you can join professional organizations and online communities to connect with other digital marketing professionals.

Gaining Experience

The market is very competitive and hunting clients is like getting a fish from the pond of crocodiles. You will have to be very sharp and smart in your approach. Keep in mind that offering low rates is not a good move because it will devalue you. So wait for the dream clients and keep hunting but don’t sit idle.

Start Personal Projects and Volunteer

While you are hunting clients, keep your practice on. You can market your own services to see how good you are at your approach. You can offer services to one of your friends to test your skills. It may seem useless because you won’t be getting any cash in your pocket, but you will be getting something to add to your portfolio. You can show that case while hunting for new clients.

I remember when I started my digital agency about 12 years ago, I offered free services to a couple of organizations and fortunately one was a governmental organization. It was such a big badge in my portfolio that I earned many clients after that.

Internships

The other option is to join some reputable organization as an internee. Internships provide an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field. Look for internships at digital marketing agencies, startups, and other companies that have a strong online presence

Fiverr, Upwork, and People Per Hour – Career Spoiling Platforms

Freelance work is another great way to gain experience in digital marketing. You can offer your services to small businesses and startups in your area or find freelance work online through platforms like Upwork and Freelancer.

But to be honest, I won’t recommend this thing. Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer, or People Per Hour are now overcrowded. If you rely on these platforms for client hunting, you will soon become disappointed. I have seen a lot of my students who earned skills, joined these career-spoiling platforms, and left the field because they couldn’t get any clients there.

By building a professional network and gaining experience in the field, you can launch a successful digital marketing career. Keep learning, stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies, and don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things.

Strategies for Starting Digital Marketing

Let’s suppose you get a call and the person on the phone said that they want to hand over their digital marketing to you. What will be your reaction? You will be jumping with joy. But then suddenly the person asks, “What will be your strategy?” I know your face is blank as a freshly bought paper. So, let’s not let that happen in real. You must learn strategies for digital marketing so you may have something to say at least to impress your prospect or client.

There are a few strategies that can help you get started. In this section, I will explain two key strategies: creating a personal brand and leveraging social media.

Creating a Personal Brand

One of the first steps to starting a career in digital marketing is creating a personal brand. This involves defining your unique value proposition and communicating it to your target audience. Your personal brand should be authentic, consistent, and memorable.

You will have to have a good time to define your target audience. You must go deep down in the filters while doing that. You can say that the Yankees are your target audience. You will have the be very very specific and precise because that’s the key for every successful digital marketing strategy.

Once I got a client who had a daycare center, and the lady had a very clear objective – to get 50 admissions in the first three months. The city was not a big one, so I had to spend a good time defining the target audience. I was pretty sure that only working ladies search online for this service. And I knew the age window and financial status. So, I ended up with only 7200 ladies in that city and that was the exact target audience for the social media campaign I was designing. And guess what, there were 150+ admissions in the first three months.

Once you know about your target audience, you can draft the campaign easily. You will have a great idea of what your audience wants to see and what attracts them or incites them to take action. Keeping in view all this information about your audience, you can create a brand message to communicate. If you get the desired results, you can be consistent with your brand message across all of your online and offline channels.

In addition to developing a brand message, it’s important to build a strong online presence. This can include creating a professional website, optimizing your social media profiles, and publishing content that showcases your expertise.

Leveraging Social Media

Social media can be a powerful tool for building your personal brand and reaching your target audience. To leverage social media effectively, start by identifying the platforms that are most relevant to your target audience. Then, develop a content strategy that aligns with your brand message and engages your followers.

Social media is bombarded with tons of content every passing second. Only quality content gets success. So, while creating social media content, focus more on quality rather than posting a bulk of low-quality content to stay active. This means creating content that is relevant, valuable, and shareable. You can also use social media to engage with your followers, respond to comments and messages, and build relationships with influencers in your industry.

In addition to creating and sharing content, you can also use social media to promote your personal brand and drive traffic to your website or other online channels. This can include running targeted ads, partnering with other brands or influencers, and participating in online communities and forums.

By following these strategies for starting digital marketing, you can build a strong personal brand and leverage social media to reach your target audience and achieve your career goals.

Becoming a Successful Digital Marketer

As a digital marketer, your ultimate goal is to create successful marketing campaigns that deliver results. To achieve this, you need to stay updated with the latest trends and analyze metrics and KPIs to make data-driven decisions.

Staying Updated with Trends

Digital marketing is an ever-evolving field, and staying updated with the latest trends is key to success. You can’t keep your eye off from emerging technologies, social media platforms, and consumer behavior to create effective marketing strategies.

We have already mentioned above the ways to stay updated with the latest trends and technologies. You can subscribe to podcasts by pioneers in the industry. Or you can hunt for blogs that share valuable information and insight about the market and trends.

Analyzing Metrics and KPIs

Analyzing metrics and KPIs is essential for measuring the success of your marketing campaigns. It helps you identify what’s working and what’s not and make data-driven decisions to improve your campaigns.

Some of the key metrics and KPIs you should be analyzing include website traffic, conversion rates, bounce rates, click-through rates, and engagement rates. You can use tools like Google Analytics, SEMrush, and HubSpot to track these metrics and gain insights into your campaigns.

It’s also important to establish clear goals and objectives for your campaigns and track progress towards these goals. This helps you stay focused and motivated and ensures that your campaigns are aligned with your overall business objectives.

By staying updated with trends and analyzing metrics and KPIs, you can become a successful digital marketer and create marketing campaigns that deliver results.
